Since taking on the role of church engagement co-ordinator, it has been a privilege to meet with church leaders across Northern Ireland. I’ve been deeply encouraged by their passion for their congregations and communities and their desire to see the name of Jesus exalted throughout our land. While there are many opportunities, they also face significant challenges. Leading a church carries immense responsibility, and it’s vital that we lift them up in prayer.
Here are three ways that you can pray for your church leader:
1. Pray for wisdom
“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”
(James 3:17)
Church leaders are navigating a rapidly shifting cultural landscape, marked by the rise of secularism, digital distractions, and a growing loss of community. These challenges often foster negative perceptions of the church and contribute to declining attendance. Our leaders need wisdom to respond to these cultural shifts with grace, love, and peace. Let’s pray that God grants them wisdom to shepherd their congregations faithfully, and courage to lead with conviction as they face these pressures. May they have clarity and perseverance to guide their churches through these complex times.
2. Pray for protection
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.” (Ephesians 6:10 – 11)
The demands of church leadership can be overwhelming. Within the church, many church leaders face challenges like financial strain, discord, fear of closure, illness, bereavement, and mental health struggles. These trials can be spiritually, emotionally, and physically exhausting. Let’s pray for God’s protection over them, shielding both them and their families from harm. May God grant them strength and resilience to continue the work He has called them to. May they not be afraid, but rather, feel His comfort and love in everything they do.
3. Pray for blessings
“All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the Lord your God.” (Deuteronomy 28:2)
Church leaders pour their hearts into serving their congregations, teaching the Word of God, and encouraging others in their faith. Their leadership is essential for the growth of the Church and for inspiring others to follow Christ. Amidst the challenges, I’ve heard incredible stories of hope. Churches in Northern Ireland are engaging with their communities through food banks, working with refugees, community kitchens, youth work and parent and toddler groups. God is moving in power, and I sense a renewed hunger for worship and studying His Word. Let’s pray God’s blessing over our leaders, that they are filled with joy, peace, and a deep sense of His presence. May they witness the fruits of their labour and experience God’s goodness in their own lives as they faithfully serve.
Consider reaching out to your church leader with a simple message to let them know that you’re praying for them. A note of encouragement can be a powerful reminder that they’re supported and valued. Let’s commit to lifting them up, trusting that God will continue to strengthen and bless them in the vital work they’re doing.
