Evangelical Alliance: 'The Sun has done the right thing dropping Page 3 print edition'

The Evangelical Alliance, which represents more than two million evangelical Christians across 79 denominations, has cautiously welcomed reports that The Sun is dropping its topless Page 3 models in its print edition from next week.

The Times newspaper has reported that The Sun's publisher, Rupert Murdoch, has signed off the decision but the newspaper has neither confirmed nor denied it.

Steve Clifford, general director of the Alliance, says that if the report is correct then he lauds the newspaper for ending this page after 44 years but adds they should also discontinue the online version as well.

"The reality is that Page 3 is the thin edge of a very big wedge – the multibillion pound porn industry – and after a whole generation it is finally coming to an end. The discontinuation of Page 3 represents a victory for all women, and for all of us who have long campaigned for a more decent and respectful press in the UK. But ending the print version is not just enough, Rupert Murdoch needs to go the next step and remove it from the online version as well. These actions would help to move us towards a more responsible media and a more civil society," he said.

Chine Mbubaegbu, a director of the Alliance, says this decision is one step in a bigger "war".

"As evangelical Christians, we believe in the inherent dignity of all human beings. Since we believe that all are made in the image of God, we long for a society in which women are not objectified. We welcome The Sun's decision following mounting pressure from the No More Page 3 campaign. It is a battle victory, but there is a war yet to be won for the dignified portrayal of all women – no matter their age, size or colour – across the media, fashion, beauty and advertising industries," she said.

The Alliance joined the No More Page 3 campaign in March 2014, rallying its individual supporters and 3,500 member churches to sign the campaign.
