UK churches to get their wellies on

by Eleanor Ward

Farm Africa, a leading British charity, is calling on churches and faith communities across the UK to 'get their wellies on' this Harvest, and help Give Hunger the Boot in Africa.

They are a very different kind of charity working to tackle hunger in Africa before it becomes a major crisis. Farm Africa believes that Africa's farmers can feed Africa's people. They provide solutions by investing in farmers to give them the tools and skills needed to feed their families. They also train farmers' groups in how to market and sell what they farm so their families can see change not just for this harvest but for the coming years ahead.

The organisation helps to bring in smart crops and drought-busting techniques and helps with basic animal health services. They ensure sustainable protein supplies and a major new source of income for fishermen, and help forest communities replace traditional tree-cutting and wood and charcoal selling with new eco-friendly enterprises that protect biodiversity and provide a sustainable income for future generations.

Last year they held 'Give Hunger the Boot' Harvest activities which had overwhelmingly positive feedback from churches. So they have just sent out its annual Harvest fundraising pack to thousands of churches across the UK, including even more ideas on how clergy and congregations can put their best foot forward this Harvest.

To make sure there is no shortage of ideas on how to Give Hunger the Boot, every fundraising idea has a welly theme: whether it is Harvest collections using a welly boot, or Welly Sundays where clergy and congregations all get their Sunday-best wellies on.

To get involved and help Farm Africa make their fundraising activities and Harvest service resources as relevant and practical as possible for churches, they are thrilled to have received the help of their clergy supporters. They have helped Farm Africa put together compelling ideas for sermons on the pressing theme of hunger in Africa, as well as bible readings, prayers and lesson plans for Sunday School teachers.
