Delivering life this Christmas

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus this Christmas, WaterAid have launched their Deliver Life appeal to raise funds to help give pregnant women the safe water they need.

Every minute a newborn baby dies from infection caused by a lack of safe water and unclean environment.

The appeal will help mothers like Mirembe who was waiting to give birth when WaterAid met her.  With water at the hospital so unreliable, Mirembe was forced to collect dirty water to drink and wash with from the riverbed 15 minutes away.

Mirembe said: "I have been here for one month and one day. We really have a challenge with water. We can go to the taps and there is no water, we can go to the river and there might not be water there. I have had to go to the river many, many times. You can see how the pregnancy is, it is very heavy, and the bucket is very heavy."

Every £1 donated to the appeal between 10 November and 10 February will be doubled by the UK government, helping WaterAid reach twice as many mothers and babies.
