Kick-started by Evangelical Alliance and Bible Society research that showed Christians – including church leaders - were increasingly struggling to understand lesser-known passages, read the Bible regularly and were unfamiliar with difficult texts, 2011 became a year of celebrating the Bible through Biblefresh.
Starting in early 2010, the Biblefresh campaign was launched involving a large movement of 120 churches, agencies, colleges and festivals. Charged with the task of re-igniting people’s passion for the Bible, the campaign provided practical steps for churches on reading, training, translation and experience. Using the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible where the Bible was brought to the masses in a new way as inspiration, the range of projects by each Biblefresh organisation was wide and varied.
During the year, the Viral Bible Project and Get A Grip tour of talks helped people experience the Bible in new and creative ways. 70 Biblefresh theological college courses ran around the UK, 8,000 Biblefresh handbooks were sold, and 200 limited edition Viral Bibles were released into the world. The Alliance also helped raise £74,000 for communities in Burkina Faso as part of its Bible translation project.
Biblefresh helped bring Scripture to life and engaged those who might never have picked up a Bible before. We pray that its legacy will last for many years to come.
Evaluating the Biblefresh year
Evaluating the Biblefresh year Biblefresh was a major initiative involving 120 partner organisations, a significant level of resources was invested in it, and its aims were ambitious. Therefore, it was deemed essential that there was a rigorously evaluated. The evaluation was conducted by Theos Think Tank and highly commends the initiative. Biblefresh successfully enabled a wide range of churches, agencies, organisations and colleges to focus on the Bible. Individuals felt that Biblefresh increased their enthusiasm for, and confidence in, the Bible. The report also highlights lessons that can be learnt for the future and reminds us that when it comes to engaging people with the Bible, there is still a lot more work to be done.
